The First Steps room provides a warm, secure and nurturing environment for 6 babies from 6 months of age. Due to the small size of our group of babies, they get lots of time devoted to them by the highly qualified and experienced practitioners based in this room. Our practitioners support and encourage the children by providing a range of stimulating activities based on observations carried out on the children’s interests and next steps development. Within the room we have a role play area, small world play, song and story baskets, construction and sensory play area providing an enabling environment where the children can learn and develop through play.
Practitioners within the room have their own specific group of key children and are responsible for compiling the children’s personal development file, which includes observations, and evidence of continual development which is shared with parents at transition time before progressing on to the next stage of the nursery.
As well as their home room children spend time in the sensory room where there is more opportunity to participate in physical activities such as soft play, tunnels, tents as well as music and song time and ‘Rhythm Time’ on a Tuesday morning.
The older babies also utilise the craft room when they want to do some really messy play.
Outside the children have their own all weather grassed play surface which is under the cover of a canopy providing protection from the extremes in weather? The babies come out every day meaning they get lots of fresh air. Practitioners like to take the babies out on lots of walks, up to the park to feed the ducks and to see the horses.
